The Loire Valley is one of the most storied regions of France. The Saracens, who invaded from the south in the early 8th century and penetrated as far north as the Loire River, introduced the making of goat cheese in France. Beginning with her historic victory defeat of the English following the siege of Orléans in 1429, Joan of Arc scored her most dramatic victories against the English in the Loire. As early as the Middle Ages French monarchs began to construct castles in the fertile valley, a tradition continued by the aristocracy and the newly emerging French bourgeois until the time of the French Revolution. Today there are more than 300 historically certified châteaux in the Loire, among them such famous names as Chenonceaux, Azay-le-Rideau, Amboise, Chambord and Villandry.
All in all, the Loire is quintessentially French. The region, rightfully called “the breadbasket of France,” is responsible for a large portion of the country’s agricultural output. Its medium-bodied wines, in particular from Sancerre, Vouvray, Bourgeuil, Saumur and Chinon, are celebrated for their floral bouquet and simple charm. Gourmands associate the cuisine of the Loire with freshwater fish, delicate sauces and an emphasis on fresh fruits and vegetables. And it is in the Loire, linguists tell us, where the most pristine and classic style of spoken French is best preserved.
If you wish to purchase a farmhouse, village home or country property in the Loire region of France, it is most likely that your search will take you to communities that lie along or close to one of the region’s great rivers – the Loire or the Cher. Properties listed for sale in the Loire will be primarily in the départements of Cher, Loiret, Indre, Indre-et-Loire, Loir-et-Cher and – furthest to the west - Maine-et-Loire. The principal towns along this horizontal corridor are Orléans and, proceeding west, Blois, Amboise, Tours, Saumur and Angers.
